disposable camera strobe light?

I have a flash unit from an old Fujifilm disposable that I want to make into a strobe light. The problem is that the cap takes 5-6 seconds to charge, rather than the 10+ flashes per second rate that I am looking to get. I already know that the voltage can’t be increased without frying the board, but would connecting a bunch of batteries in series cause the charging rate to go up? If increasing the amperage won’t do it, can I change some other component to increase the rate at which the capacitor charges? And can a 555 timer create trigger pulses at this sort of rate? (i would imagine it can but I just want to check.)

The flash circuit simplifies something like this:

Battery –> oscillator –> hi V transformer –> capacitor –> gate –> flash bulb

The capacitor does NOT simply charge through a resistor directly from the batteries. The oscillator & transformer generate several hundred volts needed to flash the bulb. On many cameras one can hear the oscillator working as a high-pitch sound radiated from the transformer’s core.

If you add batteries in series, you’ll increase the voltage to the oscillator, and will burn it out before you get to the charging rate you want.

If you add batteries in parallel, you add total current capacity that the oscillator could take, but it won’t actually take any more than it’s designed to take. You will increase the total number of flashes it can do before draining the batteries, though.

To increase the charge rate, you need an alternative high voltage supply of capacity well above what the camera has. Also, be careful when taking those cameras apart – you can get quite a jolt out of those capacitors! ( don’t ask how I know ).

If you flash at the rate you propose, you may overheat the flash bulb.

Your trigger voltage would be applied to the gate circuit. A 555 can be used at tens of MHz; way beyond what you’d need for your strobe.
