How Is Rechargeable Battery Reconditioning Done? by Www.battery-plaza.ca
Battery reconditioning is becoming more and more common due to a number of reasons – they’re cost-effective and helpful to the environment. However, the big question is, how is it done or how does the whole reconditioning system work?
To understand how the reconditioning is done, it is first a good idea to know how Rechargeable Batteries work. Rechargeables are a group of one or more electrochemical cells. They come in several different sizes and shapes. Common chemical combinations used for rechargeable batteries are nickel cadmium, lead-acid, Lithium Ion, nickel metal hydride, and lithium ion polymer. Rechargeables have lower environmental impact and economical to use than disposable ones. These batteries are usually used for portable consumer devices such as CD players, light vehicles – golf carts, electric bicycles, motorized wheelchairs, and electric forklifts, tools, and uninterruptible power supplies. New ones are normally charged before use. Today, statistics from the US National Electrical Manufacturers Associations estimated that US demand for rechargeable batteries doubled compared to non-rechargeables.
The increase in demand for rechargeable batteries is the reason why when a person thinks of them, the first ones that come to mind are rechargeable ones. Nowadays, it is prevalent to find the use of rechargeable batteries in many household electronic products. These batteries are used in digital cameras, power tools, camcorders, MP3 players, laptops, and cell phones. However, frequent use means it begins to lose its capacity. This means, that they weaken and do not give full capacity even if it is fully charged. Rechargeable battery reconditioning can help restore the battery.
There are several types of rechargeable batteries and each type has its own way of reconditioning. One type is NiCad rechargeable batteries which are used in cell phones, laptops, and power tools. These types are also used in toys and personal electronics. Over time, after many use these batteries run down more quickly. Reconditioning them help counteract fast draining when used and restore length of life span. Select a device to discharge your IBM laptop battery that does not automatically switch off when idle and unplug devices with A/C adapters. Insert the NiCad into a device and switch the device on. Leave the device on until it automatically turns off. Remove any dangerous parts from the device then remove the fully discharged NiCad battery from the device. Re-attach the device to an adapter which is plugged into an outlet. Leave the device until fully charged. Your rechargeable batteries are now reconditioned.
Rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are more popular than nickel-cadmium (NiCad) because they carry more charge per use and do not suffer much from draining fast. NiMH batteries are made from environmental friendly materials. This type of battery is designed to provide 500 to 800 full charges over its lifetime. However, if it is not performing as expected, rechargeable battery reconditioning should be done. For reconditioning of this type of battery, you will need a Power Supply and an NiMH smart charger or device power adapter.
It is always better that you care for your rechargeable Sony laptop batteries to avoid frequent reconditioning. Store NiHM batteries in the freezer between uses wrapped in air-tight plastic bags. This will keep 90% of your battery charge for couple of months. Never use a Nimh Battery charger to recharge NiCad batteries and vice versa. NiMH battery manufacturers do not recommend regular full discharge because NiMH batteries are highly sensitive to overcharging. It is always better that you read the warranty information carefully before using the batteries.
